Ecklonia

IMG_0260.JPG

Ecklonia is a species of Kelp, which is a kind of brown Algae (Seaweed). Until I met my marine biologist partner Antoine, I'm embarrassed to say that it never occurred to me how seaweed might grow and where it comes from. I find Kelp beautiful to look at with its golden-brown tone as it waves and flutters in the currents. Kelp forests are home to thousands of species, including hundreds of species of fish, plus numerous molluscs, crustaceans, sea urchins, sea stars, and sponges. These forests to me resemble peaceful kingdoms, with the kelp being the castles and buildings. I decided to write a piece which reflects the tranquillity of these forests on a calm day. Musically, I wanted to write a piece which reflects the dreamy feels of the “shoegaze” genre, particularly the music of Cocteau Twins and Julee Cruise.
